Mike Krause and AES offer training in farm financial and risk management to government agencies, such as PIRSA and GRDC, which support the rural sector. This training includes areas such as Ri$ky Business, Benefit Cost Analysis and Case Study Analysis.

Ri$ky Business: This is a one-day workshop which allows participants to gain a great appreciation of the risks facing farmers and how best to manage these risks. This is a simulation game where participants become farmers for the day and experience five seasons, which cover both good and bad seasons. They also experience commodity price variations with the emphasis on improving farming profitability. Participants gain a learning experience in farm management accounting, applying their knowledge of risk management and gaining a greater understanding of the risks of managing a farming business.

Benefit Cost Analysis: AES has undertaken a number of Benefit Cost Analys es for various projects. One of these most recent analyses looked at a number of salt inception schemes proposed along the Murray River . AES has worked with hydrologists and the community to complete these benefit cost studies.

Case Study Analysis: The method of Case Study Analysis is useful to gain a greater appreciation of an agricultural issue. The focus can be on economics, community and/or sustainability. This is dependant on the questions being researched. AES has developed a specific method to also allow risks to be assessed, as well as allowing the ‘with’ and ‘without’ comparisons to be undertaken.
